Cataracts

Does your vision often seem cloudy, blurry, or foggy? Is your eyesight gradually worsening?

These are some of the signs that you may have cataracts. The good news is you're not alone.

Every year, millions of people find out they have cataracts. The only solution to improve your vision and see clearly again is to undergo cataract surgery to remove your cataracts.

At Dell Laser Consultants in Austin, we provide our patients with the highest level of eye care possible, including during cataract surgery and recovery. Dr. Dell is regarded as one of the best cataract surgeons in the nation, making Dell Laser Consultants an excellent choice when you have cataracts.

What is a Cataract?

A cataract occurs when proteins in the eye's natural lens break down. When this happens, the once clear and transparent lens becomes opaque and harder and harder to see through.

As a result, many patients with cataracts often say it's like trying to look at the world through a foggy or dirty window. Many things can cause cataracts, but aging is the most common reason people develop them.

What are the Symptoms of Having Cataracts?

Because cataracts may develop as early as your forties or fifties, you may not realize you have them at first. It can take years or even decades before cataracts affect your vision negatively.

You may experience the following symptoms if you have cataracts:

None of the above symptoms of cataracts are exclusive to the vision condition. If you're experiencing these symptoms, see your eye doctor to determine their cause. If it's due to cataracts, your ophthalmologist will decide when to have cataract surgery.

How to Know it's Time to Have Cataract Surgery

If you have cataracts, it may seem like you should have cataract surgery immediately, but this is not always the case. Most cataract surgeons only recommend the procedure if you can no longer complete everyday activities, including things you love.

Do you find it challenging to perform everyday chores like laundry, making dinner, or cleaning your house? Has it started to feel like a struggle to leave the house to see friends and family because of your steadily impaired vision?

If you can answer yes to these questions, consider having cataract surgery. Cataract surgery is the only way to treat cataracts and regain your ability to see.

INTRAOCULAR LENSES (IOLS) OFFERED AT DELL LASER CONSULTANTS

We only offer the most advanced state-of-the-art IOLs available to our patients at Dell Laser Consultants. These include the following:

The PanOptix multifocal lens is the first and only trifocal IOL to receive FDA approval. The PanOptix allows patients to see up close, far away, and everything in between.

Patients can eliminate their use of glasses and contact lenses with the PanOptix IOL for tasks like using a smartphone, cooking dinner, looking at road signs, or looking at a tablet. The PanOptix multifocal IOL can correct common refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

It can also address presbyopia, making the premium lens an excellent choice for those looking to regain their sight and independence.

The Vivity IOL is the only non-diffractive extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOL. It uses proprietary X-WAVE technology to provide the most extensive range of vision possible.

With Vivity, patients can reduce their dependence on visual aids while performing tasks like reading a menu at a restaurant, playing sports, or playing card games with friends. You’ll be able to see well at intermediate distances and far away, though you may still need reading glasses to see things with fine print.

The Eyhance IOL is the first-of-its-kind monofocal lens. Unlike other monofocal IOLs, which have a uniform lens designated for seeing at one distance, it’s set to one refractive power on the lens’s edges. The IOL then transitions to a separate refractive power in the middle of the lens.

The result is improved distance vision when looking at something far away and mid-range . Although you’ll likely still need reading glasses to see things up close, you’ll experience better night vision and sharper vision than you would with a standard monofocal IOL.

The Light Adjustable Lens is the first and only IOL that allows patients to customize their vision after cataract surgery. The Light Adjustable Lens is made of a special photosensitive material that enables it to change shape and the power of the IOL when exposed to UV light. The LAL uses proprietary light treatment to reshape the IOL for visual correction needs.

Most patients need about 2 to 4 total light treatments to reach their visual goals. After this point, you’ll have your desired visual outcome locked into place, allowing you to see clearly and better than ever before.

The Apthera is an extended depth of focus IOL that uses proprietary small aperture technology to filter out unfocused light with FilterRing. This patented component lets focused light reach your retina and keep objects and text looking clear.

Small aperture technology uses the same principles as the f-stop in a camera, meaning that a smaller aperture produces a more extended range of focus. Patients with an Apthera lens see with continuous, clear vision up close and far and everything in between.

The Synergy IOL is a lens that provides patients with a broad range of continuous vision. They can see in high contrast up close, far away, and at intermediate distances.

This is the case even in low-lighting or dim conditions. Patients with a Synergy lens don’t have to worry about visual gaps between distances, which may be an issue with other premium lenses.

Instead, the Synergy lens lends the freedom to focus within the range. The Synergy IOL also uses violet-filtering technology to reduce halos while completing tasks like driving at night. Additionally, the Synergy IOL addresses presbyopia during cataract surgery to reduce your dependence on glasses.

The Symfony IOLs is an extended depth of focus IOL that addresses presbyopia as part of cataract surgery. Patients with a Symfony lens can see the things around them seamlessly thanks to high-quality continuous vision.

You’ll achieve excellent distance and intermediate vision with improved vision when looking at things right in front of you. The Symfony IOL can also correct astigmatism, reducing your dependence on glasses after cataract surgery with a toric lens.

You’ll have continuous high-contrast vision in low light, which is especially helpful if you’re driving at night. You’ll be able to see with sharp clarity, but you may need reading glasses to see small print.

What to Expect During Cataract Surgery

During cataract surgery at Dell Laser Consultants, we use numbing eye drops to ensure you never feel any pain during the outpatient procedure. You'll receive these before your cataract procedure begins.

After ensuring your eyes are numb, your cataract surgeon will create a small incision in the cornea to access the natural lens. They will then gently break the natural lens and the cataract on it into smaller pieces.

The smaller pieces are taken out using suction from your eye. After removing all pieces, your surgeon will replace the natural lens with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL).

Illustration of cataract surgery steps

Your ophthalmologist will recommend the best IOL based on your visual goals and lifestyle after cataract surgery. The IOL replaces the job of the once-clear natural lens and helps you see clearly.

Depending on the IOL you choose, you can reduce your dependence on glasses and contact lenses following cataract surgery. After implanting your IOL, your cataract surgeon will ensure it's in place and positioned correctly.

After being cleared to leave, you'll have a friend or family member drive you home. While you are awake during the procedure, you’ll be given a mild sedative to relax you and for this reason you’ll need someone to drive you home.

Laser Cataract Surgery at Dell Laser Consultants

Laser cataract surgery is a term referring to using a femtosecond laser to assist in the removal of cataracts. Dr. Dell served as a consultant to LenSx, the original manufacturer of the first FDA-approved laser for cataract surgery.

In 2010, he became the second surgeon in the United States to perform Laser Cataract Surgery. Dr. Dell spent several years working with the team that developed this laser and educating other surgeons on this technology.

In 2011, Dr. Dell served as the Program Chairman of the first major medical meeting in the United States on laser cataract surgery. Through Dr. Dell's consulting relationships with innovative technology manufacturers, we can honor our commitment to providing Austin area patients with world-leading technology, often years before other surgeons.

Laser cataract surgery is a more precise and accurate way of performing cataract surgery. Using a femtosecond laser during the procedure helps to eliminate as much human error as possible.

It also ensures faster recovery times and reduces the likelihood of complications following cataract removal. You may notice that your vision is blurry for a few days after the procedure.

However, as your eyes heal, you will notice increasing improvements in your distance, intermediate, and near vision. Most patients can drive and read a newspaper without glasses soon after having laser cataract surgery.
