Femtosecond Laser shows ability to reverse age induced cataracts.Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010, 2:04 pm
The same laser that we use to created an incision in the cornea during LASIK surgery is now being studied as a tool to reverse the natural aging color change of the human lens known as cataracts. Researchers in Denmark have used the femtosecond laser to bleach the yellowing change that occurs with cataract development. After laser treatment the age-induced yellow discoloration of the lens was markedly reduced and the transmission of light was increased corresponding to an optical rejuvenation of 3 to 7 years (http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0009711) .
Note –On July 1st , Dr. Dell will be the second surgeon in the United States perform laser Cataract Surgery. This is a huge step in developing the first LASER based cataract surgery for the American public.
